CHARLIE ROPER, former member of SYDA, (1931 - 2026)

Charlie Roper with his wife, Edna.

SYDA have been informed that a former member, Charlie Roper, has passed away.

Tara Reading, who is the granddaughter of Charlie Roper, gave us the sad news on Monday 9th February 2026.

Charlie and Edna Roper were both active members of SYDA in the 70s 80s and 90s.

They both attended the meets (rallies) and took part in many activities.

Charlie was a committee member in the late 70s and early 80s and he was the organiser for some of the DA events. As Charlie was a very good swimmer and diver he got involved with the region swimming gala, getting the best out of the DA team. He was known for running the auctions at Olivers Mount holiday site in Scarborough also for organising Sunday morning walks.

Charlie and Edna eventually stopped caravanning due to health reasons.

In 2016 Edna passed away but Charlie is now with her again.

Charlies funeral will be held at Rotherham Crematorium on the 24th February at 11.45am if anyone wishes to attend.

Tara says they cannot find Charlies address book and hope that informing SYDA will help to let all his camping friends know about his death. Tara goes on to say:

“I have many a fond memory of camping  myself with my grandparents in the SYDA during the 80s n 90s. If anyone does remember them or has any photos themselves or stories to share feel free to pass my email address to them”

Tara has also forwarded the tribute link below for Charlie.  So people could post in there if they would like to.
