As from 12th December 2005 it has been a legal requirement in the United Kingdom that you use type - approved towing mirrors (E - marked) on BOTH sides of the towing vehicle. In most reported cases the police have issued fixed - penalty fines (60 pounds plus 3 penalty points) but a court can fine up to 1,000 pounds plus 3 points.

The E - mark is normally moulded into the back of the mirror housing within a 12mm diameter circle usually alongside the manufacturers name or trademark with the approval certification number.

Towing mirrors should be removed when not towing and towing with non E - marked mirrors can invalidate your insurance.

Only the widest of towcars with the narrowest of caravans would be legal without the use of towing mirrors.
